Employed athletes
Football, rugby, cricket
Your club pays you a salary and takes tax straight out of it (that's called PAYE). On top of that, you likely have an image-rights company that gets paid separately for sponsors and your club using your name and face. We run that company and do your tax return.
Self-employed athletes
Golf, tennis, boxing, athletics
You're paid through prize money, appearance fees, and sponsors, more like running your own small business. Often you have to register for VAT once you earn enough. We run that business and do your tax return.

This is a UK rule: image-rights payments connected to your club move onto PAYE and National Insurance from 6 April 2027. It hits employed athletes, football, rugby, cricket, specifically. If nobody's checked your setup yet, now's the time.
